Lamborghini, the Italian supercar manufacturer has taken the first step into the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The new project, called the Space Key, is a work of art created in collaboration with a unknown artist. The one-of-a-kind NFT is a physical item that connects to exclusive digital artwork accessible through an QR code printed on the back. The project is limited and will be auctioned off over the next few weeks.

The Space Key is made of a carbon composite material that Lamborghini, as part of a research project in 2019 sent to the International Space Station. The carbon fiber was created into a distinctive artwork when it returned to Earth. The physical object is imprinted with an NFT serial number which ties to the digital artwork with QR codes on the back.

NFTs, for those who aren't familiar they are unique identifiers that are recorded on a distributed ledger of the blockchain and connected to digital assets such as a picture or video, song or any other type of record. The NFT was developed in collaboration with an unknown artist and will be auctioned off within a couple of weeks. The core of the NFT is a piece of high-tech carbon fiber composite material, which was sent to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2019 as part of an experiment. Carbon fiber was 3D printed for the base of every Space Key. Each Space Key is linked to an exclusive, digital artwork using the QR code. Five Space Keys have been produced.

The digital artwork

After several weeks of social media posts that hinted at it, luxury car manufacturer Lamborghini has finally announced its first non-fungible token (NFT) project. It's called the Space Key, it consists of five physical items that unlock a unique digital art work NFT by an artist yet to be identified. The 'collectors piece' was developed in collaboration with NFTPRO(tm) and is limited to only five units. It will be auctioned soon.

The core of each Space Key is a block of advanced carbon fire composite material. It was sent to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of a research project. After returning to Earth, the block was engraved using a QR code that links to the digital element of the Space Key.

Each of the five Space Keys will feature a separate moment that occurs a few seconds apart as the Lamborghini Ultimae lifts off toward the stars. Over 600 million pixels make up each of the five images, which were taken by photographer Fabian Oefner.

Oefner used a balloon with a camera that captured each of the individual shots which were then combined into the final image. The result is an amazing out of the world image that reveals the beauty of the Earth as well as the futuristic, hyper-realistic view of the car rising away from it. The Space Keys will be auctioned off soon, but the exact date and time of the auction hasn't been announced yet.
